Surgical intervention is considered when there is no improvement in pain or shoulder motion after an appropriate course of physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications. In an arthroscopic examination, Dr. Murphy makes a small incision in the patient's skin and then inserts instruments that magnify and illuminate the structures inside the joint. This lets Dr. Murphy see the cartilage and ligaments to determine the amount or type of injury and then repair or correct the problem, if necessary.
Candidates for shoulder arthroscopy include patients with chronic inflammation, rotator cuff tendon tears, impingement syndrome, and recurrent dislocations.

Sports medicine is the field concerned with physical fitness and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of injuries sustained in sports or exercise-related activities. This includes, but is not limited to, sprains, strains and other soft tissue injuries, stress fractures, knee and ankle injuries, shoulder impingement, tennis or “Little Leaguer’s” elbow.

As an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Murphy uses both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital conditions. Some conditions respond well to non-surgical treatments such as exercise, therapy, medication, casts or splints, and orthotics. Surgical orthopedic options may include knee and shoulder arthroscopy, ACL repair, knee replacement, hip replacement, repair of bone fractures, disc repair, spinal fusion, and carpal tunnel release.
